REGISTRATION FORM

INTRODUCTION

                                    YOUTH RABBIT PROJECT
This is an Operation Feed Your Family project focusing on raising rabbit as an alternative source of meat – protein for family personal consumption. Many families today are living below WHO daily protein requirement. Our popular animal protein sources (beef, chicken, fish, mutton, goat meat, etc) are no longer at the reach of common people. The cost of raising these animals vis- a - vis feeding is becoming unbearable in this time of economic downturn.
Do you know that you can produce meat at your backyard to meet your family daily, weekly, monthly and yearly protein need? It is not a magic, it is possible by practice. With a small space, little capital, fractional part of your daily routine and adequate knowledge you can solve your family protein problem.
Youth rabbit project is a backyard meat rabbit operation for those interested in producing enough rabbits so that their family might consume meat every week the year-round. In addition to providing a family with a quality of meat - protein unequalled by that found elsewhere, income can be generated from the sale of excess rabbit and other rabbit products. Only a basic understanding of rabbit raising practices is needed. Raising rabbits is an ideal project for young people in rural and urban areas where space may be limited. Youth Rabbit Project lets young people experience the satisfaction of owning good rabbits without spending an excessive amount of money.
AIM: To improve family nutrition and create another stream of income
NB*: To achieve this production goal, the number of doe and buck to keep as foundation stock can be calculated.

WHY THE YOUTH?
They are: creative, energetic and have strong will power.
WHY RABBIT?
The socio - economic background of our country demands innovative approaches for alleviating poverty and animal protein deficiency in Nigeria. Rabbit farming can be one of the effective means to do that. Rabbits convert 20 percent of the fodder they consume into protein, making them roughly twice as efficient as cows. Rabbits offer a high return on a relatively small investment. The breeding speed of the rabbits keeps up with the eating speed of the family. For the purpose of this project, NEW ZEALAND and CALIFORNIA rabbit breeds will be used.

MODE OF OPERATION
To participate in this project, you have to register (free) and undergo practical rabbit training. As a member you will have opportunity to buy foundation stock at subsidized price.  Before purchasing the foundation stock, members will be encouraged to build a hutch/cage of three compartments convenient enough to shelter three animals (one for doe, one for the buck and the last one as spare room). The recommended dimension of the hutch/cage is 36" x 30" x 18" (LxBxH).  Purchase of animal will be on the basis of first come first serve and attendance at training session.
